Boutique Felony

I as well as several other designers are becoming "Boutique Felons" for a week.  In lieu of the recent CPSIA regulations regarding lead in children's items made for children 12 yrs and under, all boutique customs and handmade products will cease to exist come February 10, 2009.  The eBay and Etsy community are coming together to produce one huge launch to oppose this law in it's current state.  If you are a handmade designer and would like to join us, please stop by facebook to join in.  Here is the link: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=46891817335

Otherwise, if you are a shopper, please check out all of our listings by searching Boutique Felony January 27th thru February 3rd.  I'm not sure yet if this will only be on eBay or on both sites.  When I know more, I will correct this post.

Customer Photo's

I recently had the pleasure of creating sister sets as well as a set of bows, a bowband for the baby and a jeweled headband for a wonderful customer.  They were gracious enough to send me these amazing adorable pictures of the girls wearing their Flatter Me Fancy creations.  Don't they look absolutely adorable?  Ms. M, thank you so much for sending the pics my way.  I am honored to show them off here.

CPSIA

I just recently learned of the new law put in effect by president george bush (yes he's not deserving of capital letters on his name).

Recently bush signed a law stating that in short, all businesses large and small who sell items catering to children 12 years and under, now have to go through third party testing for lead contents in their products. While the testing of each item reaches into the hundreds of dollars per item, the fines for illegally selling these items reaches into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Toy makers have started closing up their shops. Brick and mortar stores have also started closing up. Homecrafters are scared to death that their small businesses will be finished and especially those like me, who sell clothing and may only sew one to two of the same outfit. This will ruin all of us, ruin the economy for good, cause many families who rely on that small extra income to no longer be able to make ends meet. Bills will not get paid. Food will not go on the table. Items made prior to February 10, 2009, when this law takes effect, will no longer be sellable unless you get this third party testing therefore promoting more waste removal, more dumpage into our land and inevitably killing us or for the sake of lead that many of us grew up with and aren't dead for being exposed to it. Craft shows will see less crafter's. Garage Sales will no longer be allowed to sell anything relating to a child if it was made before this date and hasn't been tested. While I would never intentionally put a child at risk, laws need to be fair and bush didn't give a rat's behind when he signed this law. Ebayers and Etsians contributing to the field of products for children will no longer exist. The boutique world will no longer exist. Friendships will be ruined. Businesses will suffer. And as we fall into a third world country type atmosphere while bush sits on his rosey red ars living high on the hog, the rest of us will fall so far down under, we will have to die to see an end to it all, all because of CHINA, the initial country of fault here who provoked all of this and are now sitting on their arses watching us go under and them surely becoming the super power. Do we all really believe those gymnasts were of age at the olympics this past summer. How conveniently, the investigations were knocked by the waist side every time. China has nobody to tell them what to do. They have no shame, no scruples, no morals and obviously no laws regarding anything. I'm disgusted at this country we call the United States and have been for quite awhile. Politicians have a better chance of going to jail than a murderer. More and more jobs are going overseas while Americans live in the "United States of Disarray" barely able to make ends meet. Jobs aren't available to pay debt. Gas prices soar with no recourse. Car dealers get too greedy and then want bailed out. Abuse, neglect, child torture and abandonment, threats in schools, lack of good moral values in many families, police brutality, retirees not able to afford medical care, social security gone and the list goes on and on and on. This is not a country that is United. This is a country on it's way to the end. Right now we are no better than any of these countries we are fighting. Who are we to say what's right in another country when our own country is so screwed up, nobody knows the right way to live anymore. We vote in a new president in hopes he will make the changes he so claims. But in a time of change, Obama has already back railed on some of his promises. Promises that are fully researched are successful. Promises made to otherwise benefit ones own greedy intentions will never be successful. Many have high hopes for Obama based off his promises but he's got a huge problematic law that was just enacted, let's see what he does with it. While many of us will be spending our Christmas wondering will we be able to sell in the new year, congress is now sitting in their happy place at home for the rest of the year without a worry. I wonder how they would feel if the whole United States ignored their stupid new law. What are they going to do, fine the whole U.S. Give me a break. It's about time this country grows up and starts acting like a country United. I've got two young children at home that fight and bicker constantly but I will say this, in a time of need, they are more united than this country could ever have hopes of being. So sad!

Just to make a point of the trickle down effect:

*ebay, Etsy, Winkelf etc will lose a large business to do with children
*Merchant Moms and other website hosters will see many websites closing since they will no longer be needed and their sales will go down and those that keep their websites will face higher rates to keep theirs open to cover what these companies are losing, that's if the companies don't go belly up
*Sellersourcebook and other hosting sites, who needs hosting if you aren't selling
*Typepad and other blog companies we actually pay for won't be needed anymore
*Toy stores stock will significantly decrease and some will close. Demand will go higher and so will prices.
*Garage sales will no longer sell children's items
*Landfills will fill with non-tested items
*Many clothing stores will close up shop
*Friendships lost of those who create together
*Bills not paid and more debt will be incurred
*Unemployment rate will rise even more
*Homecrafters will cease to exist-the core of the United States market
*Craft shows will no longer sell children's items
*The international market from those we CAN trust will no longer sell to us eliminating jobs overseas as well since workers won't be needed to handle as much output
*USPS, Fedex, UPS etc will see a decline in shipments
*Increased cost of items that will be able to meet the new requirements but the extra cost will be passed to the general public
*Customers will no longer be able to purchase the items they love
*Fabric companies and supply companies-well you get the picture!!!

There's more I'm sure and I'm just one person selling children's products. Amazing how my one business going down can affect all these other businesses and people. Again, I'm just one of the many. Despicable isn't it! I hope to be back in the new year but as of right now, there's just no telling. The future doesn't look great for any of us. They can take away my ability to sell, but they can't take away my passion to sew.  Come in, be united, sign the petition to stop this lunacy: SIGN PETITION HERE

Where's My Beef

Where's my beef? It's with fast food workers who can't simply read a receipt when preparing a bag. It's with the constant interupptions in the drive up line because the person taking the order can't punch a key slow as molasses. It's with the order takers who just don't punch in your order correctly. So for the next 12 months, I'm going to keep a log of all the fast food screw ups we incur. All the times I've had to go back for food that wasn't in my bag or ask for the receipt when it's been charged to my credit card, or just any of the other million screw ups that occur in fast food lines. Come December 2009, I'm going to share this list with all the actual companies so they can see just how lovely their companies are being represented to the American public. The letters behind each company represent location for me. So let's begin! I shall keep a running tally over on the sidewall.

1/2/2009 Burger King (K...East)
-Asked for apple fries with the kids meals, got fries and the receipt said "apples"
-No spoons for the kids to even eat their mac n cheese with

1/1/2009 McDonalds (K...East)
-Asked for 2 Chicken Ranch Snack Wraps and got 1 honey mustard and 1 ranch snack wrap

1/1/2009 Taco Bell...(K. East)
-Missing 1 hard shell taco
-Missing receipt on my credit card. They couldn't even find it just a few cars later

12/14/2008 McDonalds...(K. West)
-Asked for 2 orders of chocolate chip cookies which come 3 cookies to a bag. I received 1 bag of 3
-Paid on credit card, no receipt given

12/13/2008 Culvers...(K.)
-One fri missing that came with burger basket
-2" cole slaw container filled with 1" of slaw. Does that mean I pay 1/2 the price too?

12/12/2008 McDonalds...(K. West)
-Interuppted multiple times by the barely English speaking person taking my order and the manager herself couldn't even repeat my order to me
-Fries were so salty, I about gagged on the sodium rush. I had more salt on my fingers than Morton has in it's container

12/12/2008 McDonalds...(K. West)
-Two kids chocolate milks missing

Pumpkin Farm and Trick or Treat

Yes I know I'm a month behind. That's what surgery does to you. Throws you completely out of whack. Anyway, here's some pics from our family pumpkin picking outing and trick or treat the two days before I went into surgery. This year wasn't the best but we made the most out of it anyway. Shaylee was an angel and Brayden was an Army guy obviously. I'm hoping these costumes fit next year since we didn't get full use from them. Maybe next year I can pick a better time for an organ to go out.

Teaching the Children about Advent

Now that both children are old enough to understand what I'm talking about without the look of "duh" on their face, I decided this evening to teach the kids about Advent. I wanted to teach them about it this past Sunday when Advent began but time got away from us. So anyway, I took tonight to stop the bickering back and forth and teach a little about the first season of the church year. They were so wow'd. I taught, we read a story about little mice in a church who learned about advent and we did a few creative activities to do with advent. They really did well. The very last activity was a song about Jesus to the tune of Jingle Bells and they got to fill in 2 gift items they would give to Jesus when he arrived and then we sang the song using their 2 words. Shaylee chose to give Jesus a flower and a kitty and Brayden chose to give Jesus an airplane and a book of mazes LOL. So that was our last activity. Now here I'm thinking, what a great evening. No griping, no bickering, a real interest in learning and fun on top of it. We get done, close our books and Brayden, who calls Shaylee "Bubba" (no idea where he got that) goes off singing to the tune of Jingle Bells....Jingle Bells, Bubba Smells....

And here I thought they'd be good at least for a night LOL

I'm Coming, I'm Going

Well these last few weeks have been a hectic crazy mess.  While in the hospital, I still had items being purchased.  While I'm so thankful to my customers, this was just such a horrible time trying to recover and complete orders.  Had I known that weekend, my appendix was going to quit working, I could have planned my projects around it.  I can honestly say I've never been through something so stressful.  I have one more order on my plate to complete and then I'm off to make my daughter her Christmas dress for the multiple Christmas parties we will start attending Thanksgiving weekend.  Yeah I know, just a couple weeks.  Time flies huh.  Then after that, I decided to drop all the customs I had planned on creating and I will begin work on Valentines.  I really just needed to reorganize my life.  It's amazing how a major life event can really turn your world upside down in the blink of an eye.  I haven't cleaned my house in a month.  Laundry has piled up to the point I can no longer sleep in our bed and if it wasn't for my mother in law doing our dishes, we'd be eating straight out of the dinner pots probably with our hands.  Needless to say, I'm almost on top of my custom orders but in the meantime, the rest of my world is going down the hoo-haa.  Oh well, at some point I'll catch up...hopefully before they call me for jury duty.

Jury Duty...blah!!!  While I've never actually had to do this yet, just the thought puts me into a whirlygig of disgust.  Why in the world would I want to make judgement on a case of someone who possibly broke the law, when I could be sewing or playing with my children or even better, catching up on soaps.  Who wants to sit and sit and sit and listen to a big blah discussion.  That's no different than going to school, another of those life events I'm glad to see gone.  While I've thought of every excuse I could come up with to give why I can't do this, all of a sudden a real reason fell in my lap.  Unless they want me to pull my kids out of school and bring them to the courthouse to sit on jury duty because we have no sitters and no family living in this state to pick my kids up from school, well then they can let me skip doing this.  There's a reason why I'm a stay at home mother.  Some people like handling jury duty.  Well they can have at it.  Perhaps they could even form a traveling jury duty union to be called upon at the drop of a hat, to any state, at any time on any case.  Doesn't that sound wonderful.  Can't they all just leave me alone.  I just want to relax.

Well I promise I will get back to updating the Top 10, perhaps even next week.  I have a ton of pictures to share too.  All in time I suppose.

My Unexpected Surgery

Well I just got home from spending the week in the hospital.  Saturday we took the kids to the pumpkin farm (our one yearly family event I look so forward to) and while there I started to get really cold and chilled throughout my body to the point I just wasn't feeling right.  I just wanted to leave.  We got home and I warmed up and I felt better.  So then comes Sunday.  I woke up feeling fine and we took the kids to trick or treat out by my mom's.  Right when we arrived at my mom's, I kinda had some cramps.  Thinking it was menstrual cramps since that was due on Monday, I took some tylenol and off we went.  Well a little later, the cramps were still there so I took some more tylenol.  We ate dinner there and by the time dinner was done, the cramps were getting worse and I felt sick.  We came home.  By the time I went to bed, I was in extreme stomach pain.  I'm talking horrendous pain.  I was crying it hurt so bad.  I didn't get to sleep until after 4AM Monday morning.  I woke up a couple hours later to get the kids ready for school.  I was not feeling good at all but I really thought it was a combination of menstrual cramps which my cycle started that morning and gas...just really bad gas.  But when the majority of the day went by on Monday and the tylenol and gasX weren't working, and all the pain was now in one single spot, and I couldn't walk I hurt so bad, I knew it was time to call the doctor.  So I went Monday night to the doctor and he sent me right over to the emergency room.  The diagnosis: My appendix was about to rupture.  I had to have emergency surgery to have my appendix out.  I just got home about 45 mins ago and yes I'm still in a lot of pain.  It's hard to walk.  My stomach is distended to the point I look about 5 months pregnant.  Diarreah kicked in from the dye they needed me to drink to do the cat scan and the lovely period all at the same time.  You can imagine the kind of patient I was.  Anyway, I'm home now, in pain, but so glad to be back home with my family in my own bed.  I can't wait to get back to my customs.

Brayden's Yearly Portraits

Yesterday we took Brayden for his yearly portraits and I'm just sharing the couple we chose.  He looks so sweet and innocent in the first one and then the second one he looks like he's got some mischief brewing.  That's Brayden totally.  So cute and sweet with little stinker horns under his hair.

Happy 7th Birthday on 9/11

Happy Birthday to my bestest little buddy!

9/11/01...what a day that was. It was the day my son was born, my first born child. Brayden was originally due on September 7th, however he decided to begin his trek outside the womb on September 10th, 3 days later. In the days prior, my inlaws talked about their first grandchild being born on their anniversary (the 10th). I firmly stated no no, I want my son to have his own day. You see this family of my husbands all seem to do things on the same day. It's a rather common occurance and I didn't want my son's special day always being compared with something else so I was firm. No way would my son's birthday fall on the 10th...yeah right, do I really have a say when labor starts LOL. I think not. But fate stepped in and as I labored for 19 hours, got a fever and had to have antibiotics and my son's heart rate dropped and he remained breech, well the 10th blew by and it was now the 11th and there I was facing the dreaded C-word. Oh my gosh, my hopes and dreams of a regular delivery were now a thing of the past. But my how those feelings change the minute that baby is out and you hear that tiny tiny cry. What's a regular delivery anyway? If you think about it, c-sections and vaginal delivery's really aren't that much different. The baby makes it's way out of one hole or another, there's pain, there's pulling and stretching, there's usually a baby crying at the end, and there's that first site of baby once he or she is out. So us c-section ladies have to wait just a little longer before we can hold our little ones and we may lay in bed a little longer recooping. But it's just that much longer we can be waited on hand and foot as we gaze into this new baby's eyes day in a day out and rather than watch the horror unfolding on tv, we gazed. And those baby blues are still gazed into even today. So I'm proud to say Brayden Alexander...Happy 7th Birthday little man!

Simple Innocence

Ahh the simple innocence of a butterfly exploring it's world.  This little wonder took a fancy to my plant today and was ever so kind to show me all its beauty.  Since I name all God's creatures I come in contact with, this little one is to be known as Dottie.

Notice the name on those photographs...my newest endeavor.  Lilian Lane Photography is named after my grandmother Lilian.  I am slowly moving into the world of photography.  But as for now, this little venture is still in the planning mode so until she's ready to be open to the world the future of her shall remain in my designing mind:)

Just Some Stuff

Well the baby bunnies have moved on to live their life in the wild.  One day they were there, next day they were gone.

On the home front, we are preparing for Brayden's return to school.  He will be a big boy 1st grader now.  My how Kindergarten flew by.  He will be finishing up summer camp next week.  Shaylee on the other hand has her last day of camp tomorrow then she'll be going back on the 3rd to begin preschool.  Before I know it, she'll be starting Kindergarten.

On the sewing front, I am working on 2 new sets.  One will be for the LemonLime launch on the 27th called LemonLime Loves to Read.  Be sure to stop by and check it out.  I am also working on an owl set in fall colors to be listed shortly.

Otherwise, not much to report.  Just busy as usual.  Summer always consumes my time.

I'm No Spring Chicken...Darn Bunnies

So I thought I would take the kids outside to take a peek at how the bunnies have grown.  Shaylee being the inquisitive pokey thing she is (she even poked a 6 foot long big huge boa constrictor and ticked it off) decided they have poke-ability and off she went to give them a good finger stab.  Well the biggest baby of the bunch jumped right out of the nest and ran for his life.  So there we are, me the hubby and both kids trying to catch the little stinker pinker who is now named Thumper.  I kid you not this thing, hops so fast I couldn't even manage to grab it fast enough before it slipped under the fence.  Here's me chasing a little 6" bunny into my next door neighbors yard, back under the fence into our yard, then I climbed over our fence into the neighbors yard behind us only to sneak my way into their next door neighbors yard through their fence gate, back into the previous yard, back over my fence a couple times more before I corner the little bugger and he just sat there stunned.  Thumber was immediately banished back to his nest where out he flipped again and sent us on yet another run.  At least this time, he only hopped a foot away and we snagged him.  Again back to the nest with his bad self he went.  We covered the nest with grass so he couldn't see and came in.  It wasn't until I was in that I realized I pulled my thigh muscle going over the fence, and cut myself in 3 places.  All this for a rabbit.  Goodness!  I must be some animal lover.

Baby Bunny Update-Yayyy, they can see!

I was so concerned last night with these little ones with our storms and lightning but they made it and they can now see the world they are living in.  Their eyes have opened.  It's so funny, there is one in there whom I have affectionately named Fidget.  He's such a jumpy little thing thinking he's really going places by trying to hop.  He's the smallest of the bunch.  He tramples the others in there and they just kinda look at him like "do you mind, were trying to sleep here".  They are about a week old now and will linger for about 3 more weeks in their nest.

We have Babies...Baby Bunnies That Is

Wow such presents we have received from our Cocker Spaniel Shiloh.  He must really be feeling exceptionally lovey to bring us such treasured possessions.  So earlier last week, Shiloh goes out to make his usual business.  Upon arriving back in he deposits a lovely freshly dead mouse at my feet.  Eoowwwww!  Nasty!  Ahhh, if only you could see the proud doggy look he had given us as if he finally caught himself something special and he wanted to share with his owners.  Yeah okay, whatever...darn dog!

Now we move to 2 days later.  In comes Shiloh with something else in his mouth.  Daddy yells "drop it" and out plops a newly born baby bunny.  We thought for sure sure it was dead until all of a sudden it moved.  Shiloh just carried him in his mouth and brought him inside.  Shy Shy is definitely no killer.  In fact he is the biggest wimpy dog around....big bad dog barking his head off with the sound of a Great Dane then runs and hides if someone actually comes into the house.

So we are left wondering if the 1st gift he brought us was in fact a mouse or a sibling to these 3 little characters nested in our back yard.  We don't recall seeing a mouse tail but the fur was so short and the head resembled a mouse but now looking at these babies, well, we just aren't sure but whichever it was, it was definitely passed.  Since the little guy wasn't bloody where Shiloh tried to eat it or anything, we are just assuming, he carried it in his mouth too long and maybe suffocated it.

So for the next month, we have some babies to keep us occupied.  This is our 2nd load of babies in our yard so no worries, the mom comes back.  Unlike birds when they smell human and leave the nest, cottontail rabbits could care less.  They are just so sweet.  Take a look for yourself.  The first two are from 3 days ago.  The rest are from today.  We had to take them out of their nest so we could mow and weed eat.

The Love of a Pet

This past Wednesday, we had to say goodbye to a loved one in our family. Skittles, our beagle of 9 years, was sadly put down.

It seems so strange to think at the beginning of the year, she was a happy go lucky girl, chasing our other dog, enjoying life. Then came one day a couple months into the year, when Skittles seemed to have taken an injury. She yelped every time she had to lift her legs up stairs or when she'd get up from sleeping. The poor thing was in pain and how it happened, we had no clue but after dealing with it for a couple weeks, off we went to the doctor where she was x-ray'd. Well other than one leg different in size from the other which let me say was so barely there, I couldn't even tell but okay whatever, she was fine. They were a little concerned over the leg difference but gave her pain killers and sent her on her way. That was it. Within the week, Skittles resumed normal activity.

Shortly after in early April, Skittles went back for her routine checkup. Well according to Dr. Know It All, Skittles needed dental surgery to fix some of her periodontal disease. Okay so the weird thing is, we don't know anyone that bathes their dogs, cleans their teeth and ears often, cuts nails etc etc and yet here we are faced with something that our dog gets being clean while others skate by being the dirty dogs they are. Go figure. Skittles also had a lump about the size of a walnut on her back thigh which the doc also wanted removed and tested. So we schedule surgery. Surgery went well with the exception of the phone call I got during her surgery, "oh we'd like to pull 4 of her teeth because they are loose and could cause abscesses, by the way that will be an additional $700 on top of the $600 you are already paying. Umm yeah right. Do we look like we grow a money tree in the back yard. I think not. We declined.

So for the following couple weeks, we gave Skittles pills, soaked her food to make it soft for her, coddled her with that cone on her head since she was so mad she had it on. We took care of her like she was the princess she actually thought she was. Her recovery seemed to be going well. 3 weeks after surgery, we had follow up and we were given the all clear. Yayy, no more cone.

Over the course of the next couple weeks, Skittles started refusing food period. We tried everything. We gave her hard food, soft food, canned food, dog and human food mixed together, human food period. She tried each for a couple days then would give up on each one by one.  Back to the doctor we go.  What did the doc say: "Skittles is being stubborn and associating the pills being put in her food and how much she didn't like it with her dog bowl.  Change bowls and put somewhere else."  Alrighty then.  To any other person this may sound like a real joke of a doctor but to us, this would totally fit Skittles and her personality.  She was the prissiest dog we knew.

The next couple weeks, brought no changes.  At this point, I was fed up with this doctor who should have tested her blood on the last visit but didn't.  They wanted me to come back, pay another visit charge and then do a blood test.  While all this had been going on with Skittles, we switched our other dog to a new vet closer to home.  We were in love.  Is it possible to really love your vet that much?  Oh yes, it is.  There was no comparison both in price and bedside manner.  We chose to take Skittles for a second opinion.  They were immediately worried about her.  They took blood and x-ray'd her whole body.  Then came the news.  Skittles had something on her lung.  With just an x-ray it couldn't be determined in full.  We needed an ultrasound to determine definitely but from what could be seen, we were looking at either a partially collapsed lung that occurred during surgery at this other vet, a massive tumor on the lung that could be cancerous or pneumonia.  Skittles was in serious condition and losing weight quickly.  Our hands were tied.  After spending over $1200 on Skittles in the last month, we just couldn't do an ultrasound which would have been upwards of $500.  We had to draw the line somewhere.  They put Skittles on antibiotics over the next couple weeks just to see if they would help then we would know we were looking at a lung infection.  The med's sadly did not help and by this point, Skittles was no longer being sociable.  Her bones were sticking out and she had developed a nasty huffing and coughing sound.

Back to the doctor.  Another x-ray was given just to see if the med's helped.  They didn't and we were advised to consider putting her down.  There was no hurry in doing this, just when we felt it was time.  Our doctor was amazing.  Crying right there with us, she consoled us as best she could talking about how beautiful Skittles was and what a good dog she was.

We decided to have her put down a week and a half later but were having a very difficult time accepting it.  Then it happened.  2 days before this dreaded day, Skittles started getting up, moving around, being sociable again, eating dog food...huh!  What was going on?  We called the vet to cancel and they were in complete shock but more than happy to cancel that appointment.  For the following week, Skittles seemed to be doing slightly better.  She was taking walks and wagging her tail.  We then had hope until the following week when she did a complete 180 again.  Refused all food except lunchmeat.  At this point, she was unbearable to watch.  So thin and the cough, it was horrible.  We knew Skittles had given us that extra time to get used to the idea of needing to tell her goodbye.  What a gift that was.  We rescheduled the day to have her put down.  Right before she went in, she started vomitting a little blood and we knew.  That was one of the hardest days I have had to go through.  Tomorrow it will be a week since her passing, and it's been excruciatingly hard.  Some of our family and friends have been there to support us and help get us through this trying time.  Then other family members have completely downplayed that she was a family member to us, a child if you will which was just hurt on top of hurt already.  How can people be so cruel, I wonder.

For now, we are all trying to cope with the loss and the void in our lives but each day is slightly better than the last.  Nothing like a pet to tug hard on those heart strings especially a pet like Skittles who definitely kept us on our toes and laughing constantly.  She is terribly missed.

Shaylee's 4th Birthday Portraits

Well with all that has gone on the last couple months with Shaylee being sick and our dog being sick and all the other crazy life events, we missed having Shaylee's portraits done at her birthday back in May so yesterday we finally go them done and I love how they came out.
